PLA vs. ASA for Planters: Indoor and Outdoor Materials

Choose the material for the place where your planter will live. At Viviero3D, Indoor means PLA. Outdoor means ASA. Select Outdoor on the product page when ordering for a patio, balcony, porch, or garden display.

The same design can be available in more than one material. A photograph, product name, or color alone does not identify the material in your order: your selected use and finish do.

PLA or ASA: which planter should you choose?

Available sizes, colors, drainage configurations, and personalization depend on the design. Check the options shown on the individual product page before ordering.

Why we use PLA for indoor pieces

PLA allows a broad range of colors and decorative finishes for interior spaces. Choose Indoor — Standard when your planter, vase, stand, or trellis will be used inside and you want to coordinate it with your room.

Keep indoor PLA pieces away from heaters, hot glass, and prolonged intense heat. A sunny window can become considerably warmer than the surrounding room, so choose the position with care.

Why our Outdoor option uses ASA

ASA is a thermoplastic used for outdoor applications because of its resistance to UV exposure and weathering. We use it for the Outdoor versions of our designs. The choice concerns the material of the printed piece; it does not change the plant's light, watering, or temperature needs.

Choose Outdoor ASA for outdoor placement, then check the product's dimensions, drainage, mounting instructions, and intended load. An outdoor material does not make every size or mounting arrangement suitable for every location.

How colors and surface texture differ

Outdoor ASA has a separate palette of 22 numbered colors. Indoor Standard uses its own palette. A color name in one palette does not promise an identical shade in another material.

Fine print lines and small surface variations are part of 3D printing. The appearance also depends on the design, color, lighting, and screen. Use the ASA color guide for the Outdoor selection, and contact us if you need help coordinating a color before ordering.

On designs with multiple color zones, choose each zone from the palette for the selected material. A photographed preset may be limited to Indoor; follow the options displayed on that product.

Outdoor material does not replace drainage

Choose the drainage configuration for how you will use the planter. Direct planting and a nursery pot inside a decorative cover can need different watering arrangements. Read the listing carefully: a tray is included only when the selected configuration says so.

Do not assume that a 3D-printed vessel is watertight merely because it has no drainage hole. Protect the surface underneath and use a suitable liner or insert when needed. For fresh flowers, use a separate watertight insert inside a decorative vase.

Placing wall planters, stands, and trellises outside

Choose Outdoor ASA for outdoor use, and follow the instructions for the specific design. Wall planters need suitable fixings for the wall and the combined weight of the planter, growing medium, water, and plant. Choose a stable, level position for stands. Decorative trellises are intended for the plant support described in the listing.

Everyday care

Clean gently with mild soap, lukewarm water, and a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive tools, boiling water, dishwashers, and direct heat sources. Keep drainage openings clear, and check mounting and support points during normal care.

Outdoor does not mean indestructible or guaranteed suitable for every climate and exposure. Performance depends on the printed design and its use. We do not give a single temperature, load, or lifetime guarantee for the entire collection.
